When you are an artist, much like myself, you tend to see things from a different view or perspective. Everything that others might look at and conceive to be normal or average can become something so much more to you. You can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary because of your mind and artistic abilities. Just like to dancers or actors all the world is a stage, and to artists it is all but a canvas waiting for its paint.

I have a close friend who is also an artist and loves to play with her food. She sees bizarre artworks in ordinary foods that no one else could make up. It is strange and also fascinating the way her mind works out these intricate little details. I’m not sure if any of you have ever witness the idea of food art.

Of course cooking and culinary skills are an art in themselves, but I am talking about art made from foods. Typical foods that have been turned into some kind of art piece are shockingly interesting. As I sit here I am eating an orange, but to some this is not just a simple fruit but it is, in fact, a canvas.

Watch the video below to see what I am talking about.

First off, I did not know who Leonard Nimoy was until I started watching The Big Bang Theory. For those of you like me who have no idea either, he was in the original Star Trek as Mr. Spock. Now and for many years past, Leonard Nimoy has been focusing more on his art. Apparently in the past Mr. Nimoy has done more than just play a Vulcan. He also has recorded some music. More recently though, he is a photographer. His photos are quite interesting and many can be seen at art museums across the country.

The original photography by Leonard Nimoy ranges in price, but if you would like to purchase one of his beautiful works you can certainly do it. Ranging from $900 to $18,000 the price of the work depends on the size of the photo that you choose. The black and white images that are available are even hand printed by Nimoy in his very own darkroom.

One of Nimoy’s projects was titled “Secret Selves” with images of people as their other half or who they think they are but do not reveal. The video below shows Nimoy with one of the participants in the project. You can also review the completed photos at this link.

Today, November 7th, marks the 144th anniversary of the birth of Marie Curie. Marie Curie was an amazing and inspiring scientist, and was even chosen as “the most inspirational woman in science” in a 2009 magazine poll. To honor and tribute this remarkable individual, the Google homepage is celebrating the 144th anniversary of her birth with a delightful impressionistic looking Google doodle.

The doodle itself is actually quite appropriate for the time in which Curie lived. Impressionist art was taking shape during that time in France and Poland from where Curie hailed. In fact this year, 2011, is the Year of Marie Curie in both France and Poland. Curie did leave Poland when she was considered too poor to marry her fiance at the time. She moved to France where she met Pierre Curie. The Curies worked with radioactivity and that brought them to win the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Marie Curie was a Nobel Prize winner not once, but twice. Only one other person has achieved that great honor. Learn more about Marie Curie and see today’s Google doodle in the video below.

Marie Curie is not the only notable science figure to have an honorary Google Doodle. Thomas Edison, Gregor Mendel, and more have been given a tribute as well.

Working within the medium of the glass mosaic can be therapeutic, and the results stunningly beautiful. Glass makes an excellent material for creating mosaic art on flower pots, sculpture, or even ceramic tile. Cutting different kinds of glass requires some equipment like a special knife like item made just for cutting it with some precision. The possibilities are only as limited as your imagination when you are piecing bits of colored and cut glass together on some surface of your choosing, creating artwork seemingly out of thin air. The lovely thing is, there is no wrong way to do it. Once you have learned some basics, then mosaic creation is one of the easiest arts you can practice.

Here is one video by an artist who is a master in the mosaic. Watch, and listen to ambient music as you venture through a world of colorful glass, beholding the most beautiful images created by a mosaic artist. This is something that requires highly advanced skills, but you too could create lovely images with glass after years of practice. Watching instructional art programming with the right direct tv packages can help you get there even faster.

One of the most extraordinary types of art and painting has got to be Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The works of art are so intricate and detailed that a viewer can be sucked into the work and engulfed in every small stroke of the paint brush. Of course when Impressionism was first introduced in France it was not as well receveived as many might think. In fact these works were really experiments at that time. The artists were testing what was traditional and well known.

The popular art at the time was realistic and obvious. Impressionism allowed the artist to capture a particular moment in time. The lighting, the rippling waters, and people were painted in such a way that gave an art piece a distinct look and take on something like a sunset.

Some of the more well-known artists of Impressionism were Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renior, Camille Pissaro, Edgar Degas and even women artists. One of those women was Berthe Morisot. You will notice that the artists are all very different and so are their works. For the first time they were depicting what they saw through their own eyes instead of what was expected to be painted.

Watch this video for a short introduction on one of the most beloved types of art today.

Often the line between alternative street art and flat out graffiti is blurred in urban settings. While some cities are willing to promote a certain amount of creative expression, others are utterly intolerant of anything but un-touched walls and clean lines. But just un-touched does not necessarily correlate with clean, as in free of dirt and relatively hygienic. The dirt and grime that cover many urban landscapes, often uncared for by large municipalities, especially in low-income areas, has long been an issue of concern that provides negative reinforcement for poor standards of living for a large number of urbanites.

It is this concept that the art of reverse graffiti was born out of. Reverse graffiti is the practice of using non-chemical cleaners, pressure washers, stencils and other zero impact tools to create art out of neglect and ignorance. Reverse graffiti artists clean patterns, pictures, and other messages onto walls, tunnels, signs, and other urban infrastructure to create beauty and art out of grime from excessive pollution and the failure of government clean up. And while many images that are created using reverse graffiti range from aesthetically pleasing to detailed beauties, the medium here certainly sends a much greater message than any visual depiction that results.

By cleaning a piece of art into a dirty wall, reverse graffiti artists reveal just how badly unkept city streets and buildings are, and just how severe the pollution and neglect are. People walking by realize what a certain structure is actually supposed to look like through the clean surfaces peaking out through patterns on the wall, weighing feelings of disgust and amazement about the effects of modern lifestyle. Overtime, the picture will disappear into the grime, or be cleaned off entirely when the powers that be realize the political message being sent to the masses through different projects.

The most powerful part about this alternative medium is that is forces the city government into a lose-lose situation: they either clean up the “graffiti”, which by doing do is acquiescing to the artists demands for a cleaner city and thus admitting guilt, or do nothing about it, which is being stubborn and still admitting guilt, allowing the artist to show how quickly his art will fade yet again into the wall as soot and dirt gradually fill the clean lines he or she has created. So if you feel like your neighborhood is dirty due to neglect and are fed up with the willful ignorance and inattention, then get your wash bucket and rag out in the street and create something worthwhile! Don’t settle for a simple and uninspired “CLEAN ME”, but you will most likely have a better chance at making an impact by showing intellect and creativity to prove your point.

Art is a unique interpretation or expression of someone or something. Traditionally, art is a means of telling a story or evoking an emotional response. Art is a representation of the cultural environment of the time. Alternately, art can also be used to respond to that culture. There are many forms of art. What form of art is loved by one person, may be detested by another. That is the beauty of the world of art. It truly is for every person on the planet to enjoy. Every person has some creativity in their soul. They just have to find it.

Art has always been a controversial statement. The popularity of many artists capitalized on this controversy. Artists are still doing the same today. There is a famous summer exhibition that takes place in the United Kingdom each year. This year the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is drawing a lot of mixed reviews and controversy. This is the largest open-submission of contemporary art exhibitions in the world. This year, there were over 12,000 entries from 27 different world countries submitted. Of these submissions, 1,117 works of art are on display. This exhibition has been an annual event since 1769.

This year’s exhibition runs from June 7th to August 15th. The event helps to support the Royal Academy of Arts. This is also a place where exhibits are on sale. In past years, the exhibition has been highlighted as a display of world cultures blending together in the form of art. It is also an event where everyone is welcome to apply, and amateur artists are displayed alongside more prominent ones. There has always been a theme of universalism with regards to art. This year, the promoters of the summer exhibition have tried a different style. They did not stick to a theme hoping the have a more eclectic display.

Perhaps it is this change that has created the controversy. Reviews have been towards one extreme to the other. Many are dissatisfied with the lack of artistry. These detractors feel that the exhibition has become a place where the money is more important than the arts. Many are appalled at the lack of organization to the display. There are those that have expressed remorse over the missing element of unity. Many people feel that the entire mood this year is cold and a bit snobbish. This summer event has been known for its spontaneity and tolerance in past years.

There have been a lot of favorable reviews as well. It has been noted that the event has incorporated more photographic art this year. This is seen as a change for the better to many. There are a lot of modern art pieces on display. Many art lovers prefer more traditional forms of artwork. If beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, than perhaps art is in each individual’s soul. Art is an ever changing culture. Controversy in the art world has always existed , and will likely continue.

Ever since the dawn of time there have been artists. The first recorded proof being that of crudely drawn cave paintings that dates back to over 32,000 years ago. Even before art was recorded people still strived to express themselves and their ideas.

Learning to create and express oneself is a uniquely human characteristic (with some minor exceptions from those painting monkeys, elephants and such). Artwork comes in many forms and had once been considered a form of a highly practiced skill suck as carpentry or bow making. Many art forms today include: painting, photography, music, writing, jewelry, and other crafts. The majority of people however, still think of art of paintings, sculptures and other visual creations, when they hear the term art.

Artwork speaks to both the artist and those viewing the piece. Sometimes the artists’ feelings and motivations for creating the piece are not the same as those viewing the piece. The key characteristic of the most famous pieces are ones that make us think, they make us feel. Other really popular pieces give us a unique look at a particular time period in history.

The aesthetic appeal alone has made purchasing artwork very profitable. People love to incorporate beauty into their lives – the beauty of a scene, moment or feeling. Even the most grotesque artwork holds beauty. The beauty lies in what it makes you feel, how you react and then change your life.

Paintings and pictures of war show can show us the horrible atrocities created. People who then view that piece may feel a sense of gratitude for those that fought and died for a cause. Others may see the darkness that also lives in human nature and then work on making life better; work on preventing those atrocities from happening again.

The tools people use to create artwork may change and current trends effect what is popular and will sell. Some artwork may be all the rave for a while then quietly fade into the background, while others, like the Mona Lisa stay famous for eternity. Art can capture a time period, and emotion or an idea.

Some artwork even stirs up heavy controversy on the appropriateness of the piece. Dead animals, meat clothing and other pieces that have a high shock value sometimes may not be considered art to some, but if you really understand what art is about then it is defiantly art. Not all critics agree on what constitutes valuable art, but then again the world would be a very dull place if everyone agreed with each other.

Art in any form is used to communicate. It is used to send a message or express an idea. Peoples taste in artwork is as diverse as the people who create them. Art is one thing that no matter how it may change it will always be a vital part in peoples’ lives. Art is all around us. On our directtv, on our phones, and even on our computers.
